The Green Bay Packers and New England Patriots have spent decades defined by their quarterback play. Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady, two surefire Hall of Famers, have collected Super Bowl rings on the backs of MVP, All-Pro performances that have carried the team along with them.

But if this season is any indication, both men are entering the point in their career where they can’t earn those rings alone. Rodgers, injury-prone in the past few seasons, has done a Herculean job in 2018 despite an inconsistent running game and porous defense. But his Packers are just 3-3-1, struggling to define themselves in their own division. Keep in mind two of those wins were late Rodgers comebacks against the lowly 49ers and upstart Bears. It’s no surprise, then, that trades of Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and Ty Montgomery have some wondering if the Packers are on the verge of looking ahead to 2019.

And Brady? Continuing to defy the odds at age 41, he’s finding ways to win while putting the Patriots in position to contend for the AFC’s top seed at 6-2. (The team holds the tiebreaker over the Chiefs, currently in the No. 1 spot at 7-1). But cracks in the Patriots’ offense, however slight, were evident in a 25-6 win over the lowly Buffalo Bills on Monday night. It took a pick-six from the defense to seal the victory as the Patriots’ running game, missing young star Sony Michel, earned half of its 76 yards by a converted wide receiver.

It’s clear these two teams have the leader they need under center. It’s the players around them that are the issue.

Will Sunday night be the moment one or both teams finally find the right help?

Three Things to Watch

1. Which banged-up players will suit up Sunday night?

The injury report for both teams would easily be enough to fill up a local hospital. A whopping 15 players made the Patriots report, affecting nearly every position on the roster. Even punter Ryan Allen made the list with an ankle injury that limited participation.

The most notable players are tight end Rob Gronkowski, running back Sony Michel, linebacker Dont’a Hightower and wide receiver Julian Edelman. Gronkowski appears to be the most noticeable after battling back and ankle injuries that have limited production. He missed the game two weeks ago in Chicago and hasn’t topped 100 receiving yards since the season opener. What’s worse is he walked out of a Wednesday press conference when questions centered around his on-the-field confidence.

Michel and Edelman are also major question marks. Michel’s impact on the Patriots’ offense is clear; without him, counterpart James White averaged a paltry 1.9 yards per carry. Bill Belichick and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels did an impressive job working wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson in for a nice change of pace. But the Packers are a far better team than the Bills and that trick is unlikely to play out twice.

Edelman’s presence, as we’ve seen, opens up the field for Brady and new deep threat Josh Gordon. Losing him would put more of a load on Chris Hogan, a capable role player but someone who seems incapable of assuming a starring role.

The Packers, meanwhile, appear to be in better shape. Rodgers remains on the injury report with his left knee but has been more mobile in recent weeks. Wide receivers Geronimo Allison and Randall Cobb both returned last week against the Rams but they looked rusty, combining for just five catches, 54 yards and no touchdowns. Cobb should be fine for Sunday night, but Allison injured his groin in practice on Thursday so his status is worth keeping an eye on. Tight end Jimmy Graham is expected to play despite a knee injury.

2. Where is the Packers’ psyche?

This question is clearly worth asking after a weird week up in Wisconsin. The team traded away Montgomery, opening up the backfield for Aaron Jones but also raising questions on whether the team felt they could be competitive this season. Adding Pro Bowl safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix to the departure list only heightened those fears.

New Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst, who replaced the now-retired Ted Thompson in January, insisted those moves weren’t designed to give up on 2018.

“I don’t think there’s a message it sends to the locker room,” he said this week. “I think the decisions we make are always in the best interest of our team, not only in the short term, but the long term, as well. I think our locker room knows where we’re headed and I think we’re humming at the right time.”

At the same time, there doesn’t seem to be a clear sense of direction on how this season will play out. The run game, at least, has some definition now as Jones ran for a season-high 86 yards on 12 carries against the Rams. But the Packers’ defense has been problematic. Dix had three of the team’s five interceptions and was playing at a top-tier level. How do you replace that?

Add to that a long line of stories this week suggesting Rodgers would have smashed NFL records playing for the Patriots. It’s a backhanded criticism of the way the Packers have been coached and put together over the years compared to the five-time Super Bowl champions. While the quarterbacks have immense respect for each other it leaves the impression the Packers are second rate. And no one’s really spoken up to truly defend that, including head coach Mike McCarthy.

For the first time in a while, the direction of one of the NFL’s most storied franchises is worth questioning. Who’s steering the ship here?

3. Can the Patriots’ defense pressure Rodgers into mistakes?

Monday night’s win for Patriots fans will be defined by Devin McCourty waltzing to the end zone, an 84-yard interception return off Derek Anderson dashing any hope the Bills had left. McCourty has been exceptional for this defensive unit, whose 11 interceptions are tied for second in the NFL.

That’s the philosophy this group has been built on; make the game-changing play that tilts momentum your way regardless of how many yards you give up. The unit ranks in the bottom quarter of the league in yards allowed per game and will give Rodgers his yards; they’re 27th in the league at 277.3 passing yards allowed per game. Chiefs superstar Patrick Mahomes just a few weeks ago torched New England for 352 yards and four touchdown passes.

But the Patriots also had two crucial interceptions in that game, early turnovers that built them a cushion which ultimately proved to be the winning margin. The Packers may be more than happy to give them the ball. Their seven fumbles lost is tied for fourth in the NFL; it was a botched kick return against the Rams which cost them an opportunity at toppling the lone remaining undefeated team. Up to that point, they had gone punch for punch and Rodgers appeared to have enough time to put the Rams on the ropes. (They lost 29-27).

Rodgers himself has lost three fumbles, tied for third in the league while getting sacked 22 times in eight games. All it’s going to take is one of those mistakes to throw this game the Patriots’ way.

Final Analysis

The Packers enter this game knowing a win is crucial to their playoff hopes. A record of 3-4-1 would put them potentially a game-and-a-half back in their division with a second half schedule ahead that includes games against the Seahawks, Vikings and Bears on the road. Expect their best effort in what’s been a yo-yo type of season.

But the Patriots are playing in Gillette Stadium, where they’re 4-0 to start the year while downing fellow AFC contenders Houston and Kansas City. Brady knows how to get the job done here along with one piece of additional help that has never gone unreliable: Stephen Gostkowski. It was Gostkowski who kicked four field goals to give the Pats breathing room last week; he’s 17-for-19 this year and perfect on extra points to lead the AFC.

The Packers’ Mason Crosby, by comparison, has struggled, going 1-for-5 (and missing his only PAT) in a game against the Lions last month and missing a kick that would have avoided the tie with the Vikings. That type of volatility could make the difference in a back-and-forth offensive contest which will likely be decided by defense and special teams.

Prediction: Patriots 34, Packers 31

In what could be a potential NFC Championship Game preview, the Los Angeles Rams and New Orleans Saints will face off in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome Sunday afternoon. The Rams (8-0) are the only undefeated team remaining and they needed a little bit of help last Sunday against Green Bay to keep their record unblemished. The Saints ran their win streak to six in a row with an impressive victory in Minnesota last Sunday night.

Los Angeles defeated Green Bay 29-27 at home last week, but it wasn’t easy. Greg Zuerlein’s 34-yard field goal with 2:05 remaining gave the Rams a 29-27 lead. Ty Montgomery then fumbled the ensuing kickoff instead of taking a knee in the end zone, which Los Angeles recovered and then ran out the clock to win their third game this season by three or fewer points.

New Orleans didn’t have to sweat nearly as much in beating Minnesota 30-20 to exact some payback for last season’s NFC Divisional Playoff loss courtesy of the “Minneapolis Miracle.” The Saints didn’t need much help from Drew Brees to defeat the Vikings, as he threw for a season-low 120 yards with one touchdown and his first interception of the season. Instead, it was the running game and two critical turnovers (including a pick-six) forced by the defense that fueled the victory.

The Rams lead the all-time series, 41-33, beginning with the Saints’ first regular season game in franchise history. For games in New Orleans, the Rams lead 19-17. These teams have split their six most recent meetings dating back to 2009.

Three Things to Watch

1. Todd Gurley vs. the Saints’ run defense

In practical terms, Gurley is the Rams’ rushing attack. He has averaged exactly 100 yards per game on the ground. No one else on the Rams’ roster has compiled more than 200 rushing yards over the course of the season. He has rushed for 11 touchdowns while the rest of the team has none.

The Saints’ rushing defense is the stingiest in the NFL. They have permitted the fewest yards on the ground per game (74.1) and per rushing attempt (3.2). They have allowed opponents only 29 first downs by rushing, second fewest in the NFL. New Orleans has allowed more than 100 yards on the ground just once — to Tampa Bay in the season opener — and that game remains their only loss.

2. Drew Brees vs. the Rams’ pass defense

Drew Brees threw for less than 200 yards for only the 17th time in a game in which he played beyond the first quarter with the Saints. As the result on Sunday showed, such a low total does not necessary spell doom for New Orleans. Actually, the Saints have a record of 10-7 in those cases.

The Rams have invested in building their defensive line into the foundation of its solid defense. In April, they signed high-profile free agent Ndamukong Suh who has defensed two passes, recovered two fumbles and recorded 22 tackles, including three sacks, this season. Aaron Donald, selected in the first round of the 2014 draft by the Rams, leads the team with 10 sacks. In 2012, they used a first-round draft pick for Michael Brockers, who has 17 solo tackles and a sack this season.

Los Angeles has kept opposing passing offenses under control, more or less. They rank 10th in terms of fewest passing yards allowed per game (230.5) with two opponents being held below 150 yards. They are tied for 11th for fewest passing touchdowns surrendered (12). They are tied for 14th for interceptions with seven.

3. Jared Goff vs. the Saints’ pass defense

Opponents have pressured Goff enough to reduce his passing productivity. He has thrown for less than 300 yards in four games this season. In half of those he was sacked five times. He has been sacked 2.1 times per game on average and at least once in all eight games so far. Both the Broncos and the Packers dropped him for losses on five plays. In those two games, he threw for fewer than 300 yards and under 55 percent completion rate. Only one other opponent (Oakland in the season opener) has held him under both thresholds this year.

The Saints’ pass defense has some reasons to suspect its effectiveness. They have sacked opponents’ quarterbacks 17 times, tied for 23rd in the NFL. Their five interceptions rank as fifth lowest. How much will Marcus Davenport’s absence due to an injured toe diminish the Saints’ defensive line?

Final Analysis

The result of this game will likely affect playoff seeding in the NFC. The Saints already hold the head-to-head tiebreakers against the current leaders of the NFC East (Redskins) and the second-place team in the NFC North (Vikings). The winner of this game appears to be on track to secure the top seed in the NFC playoffs.

Both teams have played outstandingly though not perfectly so far. Their defenses rank high in multiple categories but still have some exploitable weaknesses. Their offenses have balanced attacks. This match-up has the look of an epic battle that deserved a primetime audience.

Prediction: Saints 27, Rams 24

Two old AFC West rivals will renew what has been a very competitive rivalry as the Seattle Seahawks (4-3) and the Los Angeles Chargers (5-2) will battle it out on Sunday afternoon at CenturyLink Field.

Seattle continued its winning ways last Sunday at Detroit, dominating the line of scrimmage in a 28-4 win over the Lions. Russell Wilson was nearly flawless throwing the football and the offensive line continued to move develop into one of the better run blocking units in the league. Chris Carson continued to pound the rock and the ground as he rushed for 105 yards on 25 carries and scored one touchdown. Tight End Ed Dickson also made a big impact in his first game back from injury as he had two catches for 54 yards and one touchdown. K.J. Wright’s return only added to a Seahawks defense that continues to get better on a weekly basis. Turnovers were another huge factor for the Seattle defense as they forced three turnovers and always found a way to get them at the most important times.

Los Angeles is coming off a bye week as they last played in London and held off the Tennessee Titans 20-19. The Chargers are led by quarterback Philip Rivers who is playing some of the best football of his career as he has completed 69.1 percent of his passes while throwing 17 touchdown passes and just three interceptions. In addition, Rivers is on track to make his 200th consecutive start on Sunday, which is a testament to his durability over the course of his career. Melvin Gordon has provided a nice level of balance to the offense in the running game so far in 2018. Gordon has carried the ball 91 times for 468 yards and has six touchdowns. The trip up to Seattle is also going to be a great opportunity for the defense to continue its streak of keeping teams under 20 points as the Chargers have done in the last three games.

The Seahawks lead the all-time series 26-24, but the Chargers won the last meeting 30-21 in September 2014 in San Diego.

Los Angeles Chargers at Seattle

Spread: Seahawks -1.5

Three Things to Watch

1. Playing keep away from Philip Rivers

It’s been said over the years that the best way to slow down a potent opposing offense is to play keep away by running the football effectively. For Seattle this approach will be ultra-important as the Seahawks have been averaging over 30 rushing attempts per game so far this season. Carson will need to get the ball early and often to loosen up the Chargers defense. If the Seahawks offensive line can get that done it will set up Wilson in the play-action passing game which has been so effective. Also, getting Tyler Lockett, David Moore and Doug Baldwin in a good rhythm early in the passing game with methodical routes that move the chains will also put Seattle in a great position to control the direction of this game on Sunday.

2. Chargers’ patience against the Seahawks’ defense

One thing that is for certain on Sunday is that Los Angeles will get a healthy dose of the 12’s bringing plenty of heat with crowd noise. Rivers has been around the block enough to not get phased by a raucous stadium, but it will be intriguing to see if the fans can affect the Chargers offensive line. Offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt is going to have to be patient with the game plan, and if it means staying conservative with high percentage plays then so be it. Another thing that Los Angeles can ill afford to have happen is to turn the football over early in the first half. Seattle is plus-10 on the season in turnover margin, which is good for second in the NFL. They also rank third in opponent passer rating, fourth in points allowed, fourth in pass defense and fifth in overall total defense. The battle between the Chargers offense and the Seahawks defense should be one fascinating chess match for four quarters, especially if there are big plays made to Tyrell Williams in the passing game which would really open up the running game very quickly.

3. Field position battle

Seattle punter Michael Dickson picked up a critical first down on the “Aussie Sweep” fake punt that was supposed to be Dickson taking a safety late in the fourth quarter last week. Dickson is going to get his first real taste of fall weather at Century Link Field on Sunday. It is supposed to be a mix of some wind and rain which can do some funny things with the football during this time of year. So, Dickson’s kickoffs and directional punting will become even more valuable on Sunday and during the remainder of the Seahawks home games this season. Desmond King has done a good job in the return game for Los Angeles, and if Dickson can execute on his kicks by placing the ball, that will neutralize King in the return game. Kickoff and Punt return coverage will be important as well for Seattle as it won’t want to give away too much unnecessary hidden yardage to the Chargers on Sunday.

Final Analysis

The over/under for this game is sitting at around 48 points which is just about right as both teams should have some success moving the football and put up a fair amount of points. Then you have the trend of the Seahawks against AFC teams at home in the Russell Wilson era where they are 12-0 including wins over Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Deshaun Watson and Ben Roethlisberger. Thus, you have a Seattle team that has a knack of rising to the occasion at home against elite quarterbacks from the AFC. This game will be a down-to-the-wire contest in a similar fashion to the Rams game earlier in October. Seattle should be able to play just enough keep away from the Chargers offense to improve to 5-3 on the season.

Prediction: Seahawks 27, Chargers 24

The Week 9 matchup between the Houston Texans and the Denver Broncos features two teams heading in opposite directions. After Houston started the season 0-3, it looked like Bill O’Brien would be the first head coach fired this season. Since their five-point loss to the lowly Giants in Week 3, though, the Texans have rattled off five straight wins and are now in full control of the AFC South by two games. With their remaining schedule featuring just one team currently above .500 (Washington), the Texans now have a legitimate shot at not only winning their division, but also earning a first round bye in the playoffs.

While the Texans have begun to take off, the Broncos are coming back down to earth. After starting 2-0, Denver has lost five of its last six games, including a stretch of four straight losses before beating the two-win Arizona Cardinals two weeks ago. The Broncos are a team in flux, caught between fighting for their season and preparing for their future. Denver is currently in third place in the AFC West behind the Chiefs and Chargers, who have as many combined losses as the Broncos do wins. Denver is at a crossroads heading into this game, the outcome of which may determine the fate of the rest of the season, and the long-term future of the Broncos.

Three Things to Watch

1. The continued growth of Deshaun Watson

The 2018 season didn’t start out the way Watson had hoped. After missing the final nine games of his breakout rookie season with a torn ACL, Watson came into this year as the unquestioned leader of the Texans’ offense and the franchise’s future. The team’s immediate success, and likely the job security of O’Brien, would depend on his ability to repeat or surpass his inaugural performance.

The Texans would start the season with three straight losses, two of which came against teams that have a combined four wins this season (Titans three, Giants one). Watson was bad in those games, completing only 59 percent of his passes and throwing costly, game-deciding interceptions while only posting an 89.8 quarterback rating.

Since their horrid start, Watson and the Texans have flipped the switch, winning five straight games. Granted, Houston has yet to beat a team with a winning record, but a win is a win in the NFL, and the Texans’ 5-3 mark now gives them a two-game lead in the underwhelming AFC South. In the last five weeks, Watson has righted the ship, improving his completion percentage to a healthy 67 percent while throwing 10 touchdowns and boosting his passer rating to 104.4 during the win streak. In a win against Miami last Thursday night, Watson turned in his best performance of the season, completing 16-of-20 passes for 239 yards with five touchdowns.

Perhaps more impressive than the statistical improvement is the fact that Watson has been playing with bruised lungs and ribs since the Texans’ Week 5 win against Dallas. The injury was bad enough to keep him off the team’s charter flight to Jacksonville two weeks ago for fear that the cabin pressure of the plane could inflict further damage. He traveled the 800 miles from Houston to Florida’s Atlantic coast on a team bus. How his body will react in the thin air of Denver with the likes of Von Miller chasing after him will be something to keep an eye on.

2. Welcome to Houston, Demaryius Thomas! (But stay in Denver this week.)

When Houston’s second-leading pass catcher, Will Fuller, went down with a torn ACL last Thursday night against Miami, the Texans’ front office knew they had to make a move to replace the third-year wide receiver from Notre Dame. Fuller’s replacement, and the complement to DeAndre Hopkins, wasn’t on the Houston depth chart already. The team’s third-leading receiver, rookie Keke Coutee, has shown promise with 21 receptions at 9.3 yards per catch, but he has already been sidelined for four games with two separate hamstring injuries. Backup receivers Vyncint Smith and Sammie Coates have combined for a grand total of six targets and two catches. And running backs Lamar Miller and Alfred Blue (a combined 22 receptions with just one TD) are both reliable check-down targets out of the backfield, but not necessarily game-breakers in the passing game. Houston had to make a move.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Broncos and Texans came to an accord. Thomas and the remaining $17.5 million on his contract for next season would be shipped to Houston for a 2019 fourth-round pick and a swap of seventh-round picks. The Texans were able to replace their second-leading receiver this season in Fuller with the Broncos’ second all-time leading receiver in yards (9,055) and touchdown receptions (60) in Thomas. Thomas also was second in receiving this season for the Broncos (36 catches, 402 yards, 11.2 ypc), trailing Emmanuel Sanders in both receptions and yards while matching him with three touchdown catches.

Houston’s trade for another impact receiver was inevitable as soon as Fuller went down. With a two-game division lead, the Texans aren’t just fighting for an AFC South title, but also a potential first-round playoff bye. The loss of Fuller also exposed the Texans’ lack of offensive depth in terms of reliable playmakers, as noted by the production gap of Hopkins and Fuller compared to the other receiving options.

The addition of Thomas gives Watson, who is still clearly still developing as a second-year quarterback, an extremely reliable and big-bodied (6-3, 229) veteran who is still capable of impacting games and should eventually fit well into O’Brien’s more balanced pro-style offense. The only question is how quickly Watson and Thomas will mesh. Since the deal was finalized on Tuesday, that leaves little time for Thomas to become acclimated to the timing of a new offense and an inexperienced quarterback, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see Thomas earn minimal targets at first. Surely, Thomas will receive more attention from Watson than he got from Case Keenum in recent weeks, as his targets haven’t topped seven since the second week of the season.

3. What’s next for the Broncos?

Broncos team president and general manager John Elway knew exactly what he was doing this past March when he signed free agent quarterback Case Keenum to a two-year deal for $36 million. Keenum was coming off a career year with the Vikings, filling in for injured starters Teddy Bridgewater and Sam Bradford, throwing for 3,547 yards and 22 touchdowns and leading Minnesota to the NFC Title game.

The deal signaled to the Broncos fan base that Elway was in win-now mode, and not to panic about the team’s 5-11 mark the season before. But the contract also gave Elway the leeway to move on from Keenum should things not pan out. With the way Keenum is playing this season — he’s tied for league lead in interceptions (10) with only 10 touchdown passes, ranking 19th in passing yards per game (263.8) and 28th in QBR (41.4) — the Broncos might be prepping for their long-term future sooner rather than later, and that future likely won’t include Keenum or head coach Vance Joseph.

The performance of Keenum, the move to trade Thomas, Joseph’s inability to beat division foes (0-7 vs. Chiefs) and a 3-5 record has the Broncos walking a fine line in 2018. Whi

The Atlanta Falcons and Washington Redskins meet Sunday in NFL action at FedEx Field.

The Atlanta Falcons look for a third straight victory to get back to a .500 record. The Atlanta Falcons have lost both of their road games this season. Matt Ryan is completing 71.1 percent of his passes for 2,335 yards, 15 touchdowns and two interceptions. Ryan two or more touchdown passes in four of his last six games. Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley have combined for 1,204 receiving yards and six touchdowns while Mohamed Sanu has 24 receptions. The Atlanta Falcons ground game is averaging 82.3 yards per contest, and Tevin Coleman leads the way with 310 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, Atlanta is allowing 30.3 points and 419.4 yards per game. Brian Poole leads the Atlanta Falcons with 41 tackles, Takkarist McKinley has 5.5 sacks and Damontae Kazee has three interceptions.

The Washington Redskins look for a fourth straight victory to build on their lead in the NFC East. The Washington Redskins have won their last three home games. Alex Smith is completing 63.2 percent of his passes for 1,561 yards, eight touchdowns and two interceptions. Smith has two or more touchdown passes in seven of his last 14 games. Jordan Reed and Paul Richardson have combined for 552 receiving yards and three touchdowns while Chris Thompson has 28 receptions. The Washington Redskins ground game is averaging 128 yards per contest, and Adrian Peterson leads the way with 587 yards and four touchdowns. Defensively, Washington is allowing 19.1 points and 322.4 yards per game. Mason Foster leads the Washington Redskins with 64 tackles, Matt Ioannidis has 5.5 sacks and D.J. Swearinger has four interceptions.

The Falcons are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 road games, 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games in November and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The Redskins are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 home games, 5-1 ATS in their last 6 vs. NFC and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The road team is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 meetings. The under is 9-2 in Redskins last 11 games overall and the over is 5-1 in Falcons last 6 games overall.

The Atlanta Falcons headed into the bye week on back-to-back victories, but those wins came against teams with a combined record of 4-11. Yes, byes give teams extra time to prepare and for injured players to get healthy, but the Falcons are downright awful defensively and have yet to prove this season they can win outside of their comfy dome. The Washington Redskins have been consistent defensively and just got another solid player to add to that unit by trading for HaHa Clinton-Dix. The Redskins offense is also starting to get Adrian Peterson going, which is turning this club into a balanced and sneaky good football team. I can’t back the Falcons until I see this team improve defensively. I’ll eat the small chalk with the Redskins at home.
